How to upgrade mySQL version without upgrading XAMPP?

Hi,
I have a problem with upgrading MySQL.
I am using XAMPP Version 1.6.8 and it is using MySQL 5.0.67.
I need to upgrade MySQL version to a minimum 5.1.49. I have large data in my database (11GB) currently.
Is it possible to upgrade only MySQL Version alone? I cannot find the appropriate help. Anyone who can help? Thanks.

Short answer: We don't support updating/upgrading a single components of the XAMPP stack.
