problem with running perl files. [Solved]

Postby randor » 11. September 2012 14:38

Hello, ok, I don't really even know what would be causing this, or if there is multiple problems..

The issue is this:

I upload a .cgi file using WSftp from another computer on the network, I got it so that it does upload in the cgi-bin where it should. however I have a couple issues, one is it is giving me a 500 error, now I have checked the shebang and thet program itself and it should NOT be sending out an error. So I took the cgi.cgi file that came with xampp and manually put it into the cgi-bin and it worked. So i copied the contents of the cgi.cgi file and pasted it into the EnvTest.cgi file and still erroring out?? The kicker to this is that cgi.cgi file, even if I alter that, it does not change.. example, it has a line .. echo "OK"; .. I changed it to echo "OK2"; but it still shows up when i goto it in a browser as OK. ??

EDIT:: Almost forgot, the error I am getting on the browser is saying:
End of script output before headers: EnvTest.cgi

The EnvTest script is such:
Code: Select all
#!/bin/sh

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";
print "<pre>\n";

foreach $key (sort keys(%ENV)) {
 print "$key = $ENV{$key}<p>";
}
print "</pre>\n";

Here is the FTP File in case this is needed:
Code: Select all

Code: Select all
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so 'log/access_log'
# with ServerRoot set to '/www' will be interpreted by the
# server as '/www/log/access_log', where as '/log/access_log' will be
# interpreted as '/log/access_log'.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to specify a local disk on the
# Mutex directive, if file-based mutexes are used.  If you wish to share the
# same ServerRoot for multiple httpd daemons, you will need to change at
# least PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/opt/lampp"

#
# Mutex: Allows you to set the mutex mechanism and mutex file directory
# for individual mutexes, or change the global defaults
#
# Uncomment and change the directory if mutexes are file-based and the default
# mutex file directory is not on a local disk or is not appropriate for some
# other reason.
#
# Mutex default:logs

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

well - AFAIK - that shebang says that script is a bash file, not a Perl file, or maybe there is something I do not understand going on here.

Yes, that begs my next question.. That was the default shebang, however I looked around and I found a couple different perl's..

/usr/bin/perl
/opt/lampp/bin/perl

anyone know which one is suppose to be used??

Also,

I just read somewhere that Xampp does not have a full version of perl installed, I depend on perl greatly in what I do, should I try to install Activeperl on here and use that??

Ok I'll give this a go -

/usr/bin/perl
/opt/lampp/bin/perl
anyone know which one is suppose to be used??

Actually, providing Perl is installed in your Linux distribution, you could use either.

Perl is native to many distributions of Linux - if it isn't installed - you can always use your installer. It does not actually matter for Perl (as long as you know the path and the version) which shebang you use. If you think you will be compiling Perl modules, you should probably stick with one driven by an installer. That way when you have dependencies they can be resolved correctly & automatically.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/119700/h ... stall-perl

I'm not aware of any reason someone on Linux would want to use ActiveStates, but I can only speak for myself. I use ActiveStates and Strawberry both on Windows Servers.

Good Luck

Re: problem with running perl files.

Postby randor » 13. September 2012 16:43

ok, I found the problem..

First off, I am using the #!/usr/bin/perl and it is working so thank you for that assistance.

The problem, as embarrassing as it is for me.. was that I did not remember to newline the header once I changed the shebang..

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";

I added the \n\n back in as shown above and all works well..

Thank you once again.
