creating duplicate joomla based site on xampp

Postby Cmoorhouse » 07. August 2012 19:28

I have xampp installed and using joomla successfully created a website which is running locally

I want to use this original site as a base and create a duplicate copy to tweak and develop further. I want both to run on xampp and both to use but also to be able to access both sites and develop both independently

Any suggestions of how i do this?

thank you kindly

Hi Caroline (there is ALWAYS time for a short salutation, especially if you are asking for help on a community board. It is a matter of politeness),

Well, thats not that difficult.
Each Joomla instance needs it's own files, so you should at the end have two joomla folders in your htdocs, for example
  • \xampp\htdocs\joomlalive\
  • \xampp\htdocs\joomladev\

Each Joomla instance needs its own database. If you already have an existing database, you could simply clone/copy the existing database with the phpmyadmin "Operations" tab of the specific database.

After that the second joomla instance need to get the new database connection parameters, at minimum the new database name.

if all is done, your joomla instances could be requested with their unique url. Relating to the folder naming above

best wishes,

thank you for the swift reply, much appreciated. Although it didn't quite go as planned. So i tried using akeeba and kickstart but i am unfortunately now in more of a mess

Kickstart informed me that i should be using php5.2. My version of xampp was using php 5.3

So i attempted to install an older version of xampp (keeping the newer version to as i thought be on the safe side) - and now have created a problem. When i go to my http://localhost/joomla i can not see my old site - i just get a blank screen.

I therefore tried uninstalling the second older version of xampp to get back to where i had started. i installed the second older xampp version and now cannot start apache through my control panel and cannot access anything via http://localhost/joomla

However when i go through windows explorer i can still see all the files i can created within my joomla folder.

Please please help, where do i go from here ??- I have my old files within my original c:\xampp\.... folder including htdocs and my joomla folder etc... I also have a backup of the sql database i had previously saved and an akkeeba jpa file that i had created this morning before it all started going so wrong!

All help truley appreciated
thank you
Caroline
