XAMPP 1.8.0 requires MS Visuak C++ 2008 32 bit runtime!

Postby JonB » 19. July 2012 21:09

Do you have the Microsoft C++ 2008 32 bit runtime libraries installed?

Needed -

1.8.0 will fail - period if they are not installed first

Good Luck

Many thanks to hackattack142 for his assistance on clarifying this.

Because the PHP binaries which originally came from php.net are compiled with the VC9 compiler.
We don't provide any support via personal channels like PM, email, Skype, TeamViewer!

Where is the unspeakable difficulty at telling THAT on the install page?

THERE - where all folks looks at - is clearly stated that there is NOTHING to do than simply klick klack through the installer and then the nice green lamps should light up in the control panel.

How comes that this shit is written when its bullshit in practice?

Well - I know how to search for the solution.
But this is AGAIN such a complete NONSENSE place to scare off all newbies who are NOT already

1. that much familiar with the operating system that they
2. look at such places as the system log files and
3. throw boulders at me when i try to teach some young folks to use apache

Those OpenSource / Linux Developers regularly scare new folks off and then they wonder why they keep being so alone in the dark.

What about simply giving in that there IS SOMETHING WRONG and to put such a simple sentence into the installer description on the internet site? Possibly with a simple link to the library? Are you getting executed by the CIA for doing so? Or what?

White-Gandalf - We (Altrea and I) just work here.

LOL - we are not the developers, project leads or packagers. Please also bear in mind that all the Open Source projects are done by volunteers. Their work is complicated because 'big' projects (particularly the PHP project) have 'issues' - and then we have to play catch up. If you want to do something constructive, stick around and answer questions, that is how I got started. 8)

I do not completely disagree with some of your points, however your invective should be correctly delivered to the project lead - his username here is Oswald. In my experience, even if he does not reply to all PM's, he does read them.

One of the problems with the 'age of entitlement', is that we have decided that nothing should be difficult. It has consequences. "but I digress" LOL. I don't have any answers there other than to say 'the secret decoder ring' mentality is prevalent among systems engineers (I am one, so I speak from experience)

Thanks and good luck.

Note: please keep the 'sh*t' out of your posts - we know what you mean when you use the term "BS" (or sh*t)

I TOTALLY AGREE with White-Gandalf
Threads like this should really be linked to on the download page.

Is there some way to check first that whether or which version of VC++ compiler has been installed on the machine?

OMG and to think you got all this hard work handed to you freely!

There is and always will be some difficulty in running a server, building a webpage or site and of course the typical individual who refuses to take the time to read before they start clicking!
A simple rule in software is minimum system requirements, it is a standardized system of confirming the software will work on your rig and if you read everything before you install you wont have any problems!

My suggestion is maybe Put Please Read before installing!

The VC++ runtime packages, can be seen from Control Panel -> Programs and Features (Add/remove programs) here you will see all versions on your machine.

While I don't agree with the tone of White-Gandalf's post, I think it would be a good idea to post system requirements on the http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html page, with maybe a short explanation that the need for the C++ libraries is due to PHP and not Xampp.

Thanks to all the developers for this great tool.

All very well, but as a new user I just got to this page looking for help. You all seem to know what 1.8 is. I have not the faintest idea. phpMyAdmin reports 3.52 and Xampp control panel reports v3.0.12 so I suppose that you are talking about PHP verion 1.8.
What version of PHP comes with the Xampp that has control panel v.3.0.12 and is this version 1.8.
If so, I assume from the comments above that Xamp not install the required library. I certainly did not, so do I have to uninstall the whole lot, install the libraries, and then re-install Xamp?
Help please as I have many websites to convert to the new version.

Noooo - We are referring to the XAMPP distribution version. Its the download package you chose, and it is part of the archive file you downloaded.

Thanks. I did eventually work that one out. Despite that I have yet to get 1.8 to connect to my database on line, so it looks like the data needs re-organizing as it was written using Xampp 1.73 which worked with no problems at all.

Hi, I have 2 questions before I install "C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)" so I don't mess things up. I have win 7, 64-bit and I have C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 and x64 installed. I also have the newer C++ 2010 x86 and x64 installed. Do I still need to install the older C++2008 SP1?

I started to install it and it asked if I wanted to Repair C++ 2008 or Uninstall it. I hit Cancel at that point. I wanted to ask you guys first so I don't mess things up. I guess I should have chosen Uninstall at that point and then the installation of the 2008 SP1 would start right after, right?
