Tomcat + phpMyadmin problems

Postby rnutter » 13. March 2012 08:59

Hi guys,

I am sure this question has probably already been asked and solved, however, after reading some of the previous questions regarding this issue, I still haven't been able to solve my problem.

I have installed the latest xampp 1.7.7 following all of the proper instructions. However, I cannot access phpMyadmin. Whenever I click on it, it just idles and then tells me that the page cannot be found. I am not sure if it has something to do with the fact that I cannot get Tomcat to work, but if it does, can someone please help me get this working before I am forced to give up. :(

You could use the version 3 control panel found in the xampp installation folder:
xampp-control-3-beta.exe
Right click on it to select to run as an admin for best results.
Stop all XAMPP components and remove the ticks in the Svc check boxes then click on Exit in the older 2.5 version before starting this version 3 control panel.

Try the latest version as it has many new features.
The latest and greatest Control Panel Version 3 download post is linked below my signature.
Simply extract all the files from the CPv3 folder in to the xampp installation folder and overwrite when asked - do not extract the CPv3 folder complete, only extract it's content.
Then right click the exe file to run as administrator and to create a shortcut to the desktop for example, for easier access.

Make sure that you have exited all other control panel versions before starting this latest version.

This version 3 (XCPv3) control panel has many new features including a much more detailed log window and a button to easily access the log files to help with troubleshooting start and running issues.

Hello,
Thank you for the response. I already read this response however, in a thread with a similar question. I followed your instructions then, and still it doesn't work. The control panel says that Tomcat is running, but in fact, it is not. And yes, still no access to phpMyadmin.

Without error messages and data from the components log files and or the control panel log window we can only guess at your issues and that would waste much time.

Also best to tell us what you have already tried so we don't duplicate.

Try and give more details about your issues as outlined in this how to post announcement:
viewtopic.php?f=16&t=48331
You have to help us help you.
Thanks. :)

I am hoping this will help, if there is anything else that I should include, please let me know. I didn't feel it was necessary to take a screenshot as I included the explanation in what is written below:

Version: ApacheFriends XAMPP version 1.7.7
Control Panel: 3.0.1.1 & 3.0.2 (both have the same problem)
OS: Windows 7

Issue: Neither Tomcat or phpMyadmin will work. Apache, MySQL, FileZilla are all working correctly. When I try to start Tomcat, it simply says: "starting Tomcat" but it never starts working. In the status page of localhost, it says that Tomcat is deactivated. When I try to click on phpMyadmin, it doesn't load. I have tried to also install xampp to a USB drive, thinking that it may have a different result, but I still face the same issue.

Hi there
I had a similar problem. The issue was that I had environment vars - CATALINA... configured from a previous Tomcat installation.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I have no idea what Catalina is or how to solve the situation. :'(

I am not very good with computers, I can only follow instructions.

1. Catalina is referring to Tomcat
2. You need to provide more information for us to make any reasonable suggestions
3. What (if any) errors are listed in the Apache log (/xampp/apache/logs/error.log)?
4. What error/message are you getting on the http://localhost/phpmyadmin page?
5. What errors/exceptions are you getting in the Tomcat Logs (xampp/tomcat/logs/tomcat7-stderr.date.log)?

When I try to access the phpMyadmin page, this is the message that I receive:

The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

It is not immediately clear what is causing your phpMyAdmin issues. The File Not Found Announce/Scrape errors are mostly likely being causing by a Bittorrent thing you are running.

As for Tomcat, based on those errors, you most likely have a 64-bit Java installed and Tomcat, in the default XAMPP release, is 32-bit. That leaves you with a couple options:
1. Remove the 64-bit java and install the 32-bit version
2. Download the 64-bit Tomcat and replace the one that comes with XAMPP
