Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

Apache Nor MySql will Start from Control Panel Windows 7

Postby arpeggioC » 20. February 2012 19:13

Hi, my first post, and up to now been using XAMPP (version 1.7.3) on my XP machine no problem.

Just installed XAMPP 1.7.7 on my Windows 7 machine and both Apache nor MySql will start from the control panel (version2.5).

They both say:
Busy...
ERROR: Apache service not started [-1]
Busy...
ERROR: MySql service not started [-1]

they are both set as "manual" services in my control panel/administrative tools (as they are on my XP machine). Also i can start both Apache and MySql from the services without a problem.

OtherInfo:
XAMPP install is : c:\xampp
and when i first open the control panel it says: Status check OK

I dont have ISS running, i dont think, because i cannot even find it in the Services list. (in any case MySql should still come on i believe if this was the cause)

I didnt incur any problems with installation(all done automatically).
Could someone please help me with this problem. it's driving me crazy.

with best regards,

It would be very useful to know a few details:

Which Control Panel did you use? (the beta version included in the download in the root of XAMPP has better diagnostics)

What is in the Apache error log?

Did you use netstat or a Port Checker? - both port 80 AND 443 have to be free for XAMPP 1.7.7 to run.

Did you look in your Windows System Management Event Viewer for errors>?

Hi JonB,

Thank you for your questions.

1. The Control Panel version is 2.5 (16 March, 2011)
Windows 6.1 Build 7600 Platform2
How would i use another one? Where is it and how to install?

2. Here are the errors that were logged last night.
I still cant start Apache or MySql tonight either but no errors are logged for that for some reason:
Also i am not sure if those below talking about port 80 and 443 are when i turned Apache and MySql on using the Windows Services or tried to turn on using the XAMPP CP. What do you think?

3. Upon running the command prompt netstat -a for active ports i got:
TCP [::]:135
TCP [::]:445
TCP [::]:49152
TCP [::]:49153
TCP [::]:49154
TCP [::]:49155
TCP [::]:49156
All in a state of "LISTENING".

4. Event Viewer
Not really sure what i'm looking at here but has this anything of relevence?:
The WinHttpAutoProxySvc service was unable to log on as NT AUTHORITY\LocalService with currently configured password due to following error:
The security account manager(SAM) or local security authority server was in the wrong state to perform the security operation.

.....

i hope you can notice something amiss in the above info. and thank you.

Which Control Panel did you use? (the beta version included in the download in the root of XAMPP has better diagnostics)

xampp-control-3-beta.exe <== double click

There may be a later release - look in this thread -

I would also recommend removing the services and making sure they work by themselves first. Via the control panel, you can uncheck each one which should result in either a blank box, grey check, or red 'x' depending on the version of your control panel.

g' evening Gentlemen,

That worked!! Thank you!!

I changed the the Control Panel as you suggested and it works(both Apache and SQL start) but not before WINDOWS 7 asks me to allow each one at a time!!

Do you have any idea of how to get Windows 7 to automatically allow both Apache and MySQL to run without first asking if i allow it?
(unfortunately i need windows to run my excel macros without error)

There seems not to be an "exceptions" list i can create.

Thank you up to now and in advance.

If you are referring to UAC, you will have to turn it off if you do not like it.
