pdflib VC9 version availability

Postby calast » 19. February 2012 02:47

Due to a system error, my Apache server would not start this morning and I decided I might as well upgrade to the latest version (1.7.7) of XAMPP. I am running on XP SP3, with the old 2.5 control panel.

Everything works pretty well except for running into the "compile with VC9" problem on some of the DLLs in the ext directory. I was left with two DLLs that I use regularly at VC6 level, one for MSSQL and one for PDFLIB. Of course, disabling the extensions makes Apache start fine, but I need these two. I managed to solve the MSSQL problem, but the only PDFLIB I found for VC9 now has a watermark in the generated PDF.

So Apache server is running, but I need to find a compatible php_pdflib.dll (not that the name matters) that was built with VC9 and is not the one with the watermarks from the pdflib.com site. I believe XAMPP used to come with this by default, but it was not in the 1.7.7 release that I downloaded. Am I correct about this? Or is this some extension I installed and have forgotten about?

Either way, can someone point me to an appropriate DLL for pdflib that works with 1.7.7 and without the watermarks?

Thanks.

Hi calast,

XAMPP can't help you on that, because PDFlib is a commercial product. If you want to use it without watermarks you have to buy a licence of PDFlib.

best wishes,

Has its status changed then?

It is fairly expensive, so I know I would remember if I ever paid for it in the past. However, it was installed on my development machine with the older release of XAMPP. So it must have been either part of the XAMPP distribution, or else there was a free version.

If you do a web search for "XAMPP pdflib", you find a lot of results that strongly suggest that pdflib was at one time part of the XAMPP distribution. There are messages in this forum that talk about it being part of 1.6.7 release. I've been using XAMPP for a long time and have been through many versions.

I can find an alternative, but there is a fairly large body of code that I have written that depends on these function calls. Since writing a PDF file is essentially graphics programming (go to point A, draw a line to point B), changing to an alternative would be painful. But I am open to suggestions.
