Why is XAMPP for OS X two years behind Windows and Linux?

Postby conner_bw » 13. January 2012 17:29

Hi,

I have a question.

Why is the XAMPP package for OS X so far behind Windows and Linux versions? The last release is dated 2010-03-04.

It would be great to see OS X better supported for 2012.

Thank you for your consideration.

First, would you be so kind as to add your XAMPP version and Operating System to your profile as per the instructions and relevant information in this forum announcemet:

Thanks. :)

AFAIK the developer of this XAMPP OS version kleinweby has other commitments.

Keep in mind all developers and forum support staff volunteer their free time to the project.

I am sure the lead developer Oswald is well aware of the state of development of the Mac version.

When and if there is a new Mac version it will be announced in the AF forums or contact kw direct and enquire if there will be a new version release imminent as we are just as much in the dark as other forum members on this issue until an announcement is made.

Best wishes. :).

Have you considered changing the model you make the software available under?

The only other comparable option on OS X is MAMP. They have a free MAMP and a paid MAMP Pro. When it was obvious to me that XAMPP for OSX was stagnated (last year) I, in fact, paid for MAMP Pro. The problem is their upgrade path is too aggressive. They want me to pay again for incremental stuff that I don't need. I only paid to show some support for the project. The reality is, I spend a lot of my time on a Ubuntu box and my sites are deployed on CentOS. All I need on OS X is an easy way to install updated PHP versions and extensions without having to compile them myself. Ideally the OS X developer could be motivated to bring things back up to speed. I'd chip in a few dollars. I'm sure a thousand Windows developers feel the same way for the Windows platform.

Anyway, thanks for the answer.

Hi conner_bw,

If you are searching for a free alterntive for Mac OS X for the time, there is no new XAMPP release:
Try the free Zend Server (CE) (Link in my Signature) which is released for Mac OS X too.

I haven't test it on Mac OS X so i don't know, if it is a true alternative for MAMP.
Report us back how you like it

best wishes,
Altrea
