How to protect XAMPP directory with password on winXP?

Postby theant » 01. December 2011 18:16

Hello
I need to password protect the entire XAMPP directory on the windows xp hard disk. I want to let only a xampp-panel.lnk icon on the desktop to start it.
Of course, files must be accessible via browser in localhost.
Using mylockbox all files are unaccesible via browser too, so it is useless.
Any idea?

I don't see any way that will work on Windows XP as the active user will own the Apache process, and therefore will need rights to the folders. It might be doable on a server edition 'I think' (even a bit unsure on that). I'll test something tonight.

Good Luck

Well - I have run my test and despite my best efforts, its just not do-able with XP.

The problem comes down to the fact that the 'profile path' (c:\Documents and Settings) contains a space (actaully two) in the path name and that derails MySQL - it just won't start (one of the reasons they tell you to install XAMPP in the root of a volume). The hack involved using a little known feature of XP called 'Private Folders' - it turns out they can ONLY exist in the 'profile path'.

Sorry about that. (blame Bill Gates, the MySQL developers, or whomever you choose)

Good Luck
