Can't start Apache. No log files. (XP SP3) 1.7.7 [SOLVED]

Postby Koala » 22. November 2011 02:24

Hello,

Thanks for a wonderful package that is XAMPP. I'm trying to install it in a Windows XP Pro SP3 Laptop and I'm unable to start Apache no matter what. This is what I did so far:

  1. This laptop is clean, fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP3. No Skype nor any program that is using Port 80;443. Netstat checked.
  2. Installed XAMPP with the installer.
  3. MySQL and Filezilla starts well.
  4. Tried changing ports on httpd.conf anyway without success.
  5. Uninstalled and Installed just in case but no success.
  6. Installation is on C:/XAMPP/
  7. installed new Control Panel v3.0.8 as recommended and it gives me the following message when trying to start apache: There may be an error, return code: 12570544 -
  8. There are no logs (access.log/error.log)

Any clues? I even reinstalled my whole system with another Windows XP disc but same thing. XAMPP ran out of the box on my Windows 7 Ultimate Laptop.

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

*Edid/Update: I also tried double-clicking the httpd.exe file and I get the following error:

No logs is the clue that Apache has never started.

You will need to download and install the VC9 runtime file from here:

Good luck. :)

Hurrah! That solved the problem! Thank you so much!

Why it isn't mentioned in the installation process or Windows FAQ? Or this VC9 is supposed to come with the system?

However, thank you!

It is a Windows system issue that requires it be updated from time to time with the latest runtime files for various MS programs.

XAMPP may do a test for missing runtime files in future versions.

1.7.5> was compiled with VC9
<1.7.4 with VC6.

Thanks for the detailed post and the feed back, now you can enjoy XAMPP. 8)

I will close this topic now and mark it solved.

Best wishes. :)
