ERROR MESSAGE: 3 and START FROM XAMMP CONTROL

Postby The1andOnlyO » 09. August 2011 17:46

I cannot get my XAMMP to work. And it used to work. I uninstalled it from my laptop several times and now when I re-download it I cannot get it to work. It always says Error 3. That it most be started from the Xammp control. It's as if port 80 is in use. I am running Norton Antivirus. I even disabled it and it still wouldn't work. I deleted Skype. Still nothing. What am I missing?

You could be a little more explicit,

like gee what Windows OS are you running ???

and well Like what XAMPP version???

BTW, it could also be port 443. Some XAMPP version automatically start an HTTPS instance as well.

Have you done anything to see what's running on which ports?? :?:

Win7
XAMPP 1.7.4
And no I haven't done anything to see what was running on which ports?

It used to work fine but recently when I went to use my Dreamweaver and set up a local testing when I clicked live view it didn't work.

lets forget Dreamweaver for now -

How are you trying to start XAMPP???

Try using the XAMPP Control Panel

then, when you use the XAMPP Control Panel - do Apache and MySQL start running after you click Start? or (if they are services) Do you get the 'green light'???

If they are starting -

Can you open your browser and go to http://localhost/xampp and get the XAMPP Welcome Page????

Also - did you install the updated XAMPP Control Panel 3??? They built a whole new version - its specifically meant to work with 1.7.4

I have XAMPP on my desktop. I click on that. Then it starts.
But it says ERROR MESSAGE: 3 run XAMMP from control panel.
I thought that was the control panel. So I guess the question I would ask is, is that the control panel.
Then it starts everything seems like it's fine. It has the green light.
I go to http://localhost
That works.
But something just isn't working cause I cannot see the live view of my work through the local server.
But I will say that when I download XAMMP the first time I got the question where I had to put y or n.
And now I don't get that.

OK -

XAMPP is working if you can get to the XAMPP Welcome page and use the tools there.

I suggest you DL and install the new Control Panel. They update it from time to time, and the most current version's link is in that topic

It has a different name xammp_control3.exe and it belongs in the root of your XAMMP folder. You can just 'Send to Desktop' to make a shortcut for it. It won't interfere with the XAAMPP installation, nor will it over-write the original COntrol Panel (very flawed).

As to what's wrong with the Dreamweaver Live preview, you might search on that - the problem is likely a Dreamweaver configuration issue. What version of Dreamweaver are you using??? I don't know if you have registered on Adobe.com, but they have awesome support forums. I have a LOT of their stuff (yes very expensive) but you also get a lot of support as well.

There have been a string of posts about Dreamweaver here, just type 'Dreamweaver' in the search box right by New Topic at the top of this board. It returns 20 pages of posts.

That said, and in my opinion only - Dreamweaver is NOT a good tool for developing in PHP. It was developed as Graphic interface when PHP was effectively always embedded in otherwise static HTML pages, that is no longer the paradigm. In fact, the 'paradigm' is to build code/logic that is separate from the presentation layer (all done in CSS). If you just want to do a few little things for yourself ONLY, it won't make any difference. If you want to learn to 'build stuff' with an eye to becoming a real developer - both Dreamweaver and Microsoft's Expression/Sharepoint Designer are dead ends for PHP. I know, I own both, LOL.

I would get an opinion from others before you invest a lot of time on it.

Good Luck

I'm going to try what you told me and I'll keep you posted.
The new Dreamweaver CS5 allows for PHP coding.

Just if you can configure Dreamweaver the right way.
I really don't like Dreamweaver (That's no secret, i post that on every second thread about DW here :D )
I have used/tested Dreamweaver Versions from Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 up to Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 and in all of that versions one thing is a static value. The configuration of that product is far far away from being user friendly.
The second thing is, that i can be much more effective in programming with other PHP IDEs. But thats a personal one. Every developer should choose that IDE he can be as effective as possible with.

Put the new XAMPP control panel exe in your XAMPP installation directory.
And for the other messages: stop your apache and mysql and start them again with the new control panel

It's not working.
I wish someone would talk to me and explain this process to me as if I am not a computer genius!!!
Talk to me and walk me through the entire process as if I'm in the 1st grade.
Where's the XAMMP Installation directory etc?

The XAMMP installation directory is where YOU installed XAMPP. For most folks that is C:\xampp.
