XAMPP homepage

Postby Domo230 » 06. May 2011 19:41

Hi guys.

I have been learning web design for about 6 months now and im starting to experiment with dynamic webpages.
I have started looking into mysql and when I found a guide for using it with xampp it told me to go to localhost.

It was then that I realised my localhost was completely different to most people using xampp. It just said index of/ and listed the files in htdocs. When i click into the /xampp/ folder from this I get an error in google chrome saying "this web page has a redirect loop".

I am using windows vista.

Any help would be appreciated.

First establish that Apache and MySQL are Running by checking this in the XAMPP Control Panel - should both show a green running indication.

Read the xampp\apache\logs\error.log file for clues.

You are typing http://localhost in your browser?

Try http://localhost/xampp/index.php

Xampp appears to be running fine, ive been using it to test static pages for the last few months. htdocs is listed among the index so I just go into that and run whatever page I want to run.

I opened up the error.log file and its all jibberish to me.

So why don't you post your error.log file here, that someone can take a look at this?

What do you see in the \xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf file at about line 183 for DocumentRoot?

What do you see about line 210 for the <Directory> directive?

Have you made any changes from the default setting of any Apache configuration files?
If so what did you change?

Which version of XAMPP are you using?

Stop Apache and MySQL.

Go to C:\xampp\apache\logs and delete the access.log file and the error.log file as they will be created again when Apache starts.

Start Apache and MySQL make sure they both show a green running.

Now type http://localhost in your browser - what do you see?

Close that window or tab in your browser and then type http://localhost/xampp/index.php in a new window or tab - what do you see.

Now go to your error.log file and copy and paste the contents here.

To get rid of the pesky favicon.ico error in the log files simply copy the C:\xampp\htdocs\xampp\img\xampp.ico to the C:\xampp\htdocs\ folder and rename it favicon.ico
(in 1.7.4 this file is already included).

Tell me what files and folders you see in the htdocs folder now.

I did what you said and things are still the same.

In my htdocs folder there is now xampp (folder) , Assignment (folder where I store more html files) , favicon.ico , various html and php files and a .wav audio file

You may need to reinstall using the ZIP version as often the Installer version has been known to cause issues in some situations - back up your own files and folder first then simply copy them back into the fresh install.

Here are some easy to follow instructions how to uninstall and then install again using the ZIP version:
