bogging down windows 2000 - need help

After installing xampp and starting apache, after about 30 minutes of working with PHP scripts (very basic), the virtual memory is full and the system slows to a halt.

Anyone know what causes this? I am teaching a PHP class but decided to use windows 2000 for in-class work. Each day, a couple of students find their machines grinding to a halt. The pages they are working on are beginning PHP pages.
