Tutorial or Beginner

Postby claudius » 24. March 2011 05:13

I searched but I couldn't find what I needed under tutorial or beginner..

I have XAMPP open and removed skype the 80 and the other so it now says 'apache service started'.. But I have no clue what next. Is there a tutorial or a book on this? Or can anyone point me in the right directions?

Some helpful reading for new XAMPP users:
\xampp\readme_en.txt file

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-windows.html
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/faq-xampp-windows.html

Search Google or your favorite search engine for third party created XAMPP tutorials.

To start and test your installation go to http://localhost in your browser and select your language then click on the various menu items.

Thanks Sharley,

I have XAMPP control panel open after looking at your links. SQL is running but apache is not. I changed the skype to different ports. And the FAQ resource says my firewall virus - Trend Micro could be the problem.

How do you check the firewall virus? Or else what else should I try?

Read the \xampp\apache\logs\error.log file in your text editor and see if there are any clues why Apache can't start.

Disable IIS (World Wide Publishing) which is the default Windows web server.
viewtopic.php?p=176260#p176260

I don't know your 'virus firewall' at all so read it's documentation to see how you allow the ports that XAMPP uses - port 80, 443 and 3306.
Or disable your firewall anti-virus software temporarily to see if it helps, then at least you can eliminate it from the equation or know that you have to change some settings in the firewall anti-virus or what ever.

Always try and post any error messages you get so we can perhaps help you better and remember we can't see or know what you do or see on your PC unless you tell us in great detail.

"stop and disable the www service

type services.msc from the run command prompt > scroll down to World Wide Publishing service."

I found this from the instructions to disable www service.. And I tried it but in my services no Word Wide Publishing is listed

"Read the \xampp\apache\logs\error.log file in your text editor and see if there are any clues why Apache can't start."

Sharley I literaly crawled out of a rock in forums wasteland and someone linked me to this site to build a web page. I don't know what text editor is. I tried to search for it in my start menu. I have windows xp. Sorry I am so clueless!

Notepad is a text editor and simply drag the log file into an open window in notepad.

In Windows XP use the other means of disabling IIS using the Control Panel mentioned in the link I gave above.

Remember to stay cool as we all had to start at the beginning at some stage in our lives. :)
Help is here but you have to help us help you.

Which means that Apache has never started on your PC.

See my edited post above to disable IIS using the Windows Control Panel method.

If we can't get you up and running then I can suggest an alternate method to download and install XAMPP 1.7.4 if you used the installer exe version as some are having trouble with this version.

I'm a little confused looking over the removing of IIS instructions. I am not sure they are for windows xp. I don't see any administrative tools in my start menu?

You are not logged in to XP with administrator privileges which makes it difficult to administer a web server - try and login as an administrator.

These are the instructions to disable IIS and don't require to use the administrative tools:
Go to the Windows Control Panel Click on Add or Remove Programs then click on Add/Remove Windows Components next look for the item Internet Information Services (IIS) and remove the tick from the check box and proceed to next etc.
(If no tick in the box then IIS is not enabled and we have to look elsewhere for a solution as to why Apache can't start).

Also you can try this to verify that IIS is not running:
Right click on the Task Bar at the bottom of your screen and select from the menu Task Manager then click on the Processes tab and look for a process named inetsrv.exe let me know back if you find one?

How do I tell if I am an administrator? I assume I am as I have never noted anything regarding that for some time maybe a year now??

I tried the instructions for IIS and it was not checked and also the process wasn't listed in the task manager..

Click on Control Panel then on Users (it will say under your login name Computer Administrator if you are logged in as an admin).
If not then click on your name and then on Change my account type then select Computer administrator then on the Change account type button.

Let me know back if you want to start afresh with a different installation method that may fix these strange issues you are having.

Hello Computer Administrator. :)
You can get to the Administrative tools from the Windows Control Panel.

I'm still around as it is only the afternoon here. :)

First we have to get rid of your current XAMPP installation.

1. Open the XAMPP Control Panel.

2. Remove any ticks in the Svc check boxes.

3. Stop any of the components from running.

4. Click on Exit in the XAMPP Control Panel.

5. Delete the xampp folder.

Now we can try another method.

1. Download the zip version from the XAMPP Home Page.
You still have the link to this page?

2. Extract the contents to the C:\ drive so you have C:\xampp
Do not extract to a folder like program files that has a space in the name or it can cause problems.

3. Run (double click) the setup_xampp.bat file in the xampp folder.

4. Run (double Click) the xampp-control.exe file in the xampp folder.
This is the XAMPP Control Panel.

5. Start Apache and MySQL but do not put ticks in any Svc box.

6. When you see the green running indication in both Apache and MySQL open your web browser and type http://localhost

7. Select your language

8. Try out all the demos in the left hand menu.

9. Enjoy!
