Error http 500 received when trying to set password for MyS

Hi all,
I have the following local platform on Win Vista SP2:
XAMPP 1.7.1
Apache 2.2.11
PHP 5.2.9
MySQL 5.1.33

When I installed MySQL on localhost, I set that the MySQL admin user (root) has no password set.
Now, I want to set a password for the root user, but every time that I set a password, I'm no more able to display the web site: loading the address http://localhost/joomla I receive the error message 500: Http internal server error.

Someone can help me ? Is it necessary to modify something else ?

The xampp\apache\logs\error.log file will have more reliable info about server errors especially error 500.

I set the password to MySQL admin user (root) again and I try to load http://localhost/joomla; I received error 500 again but no entries where added to logfile xampp\apache\logs\error.log.

This is strange behavior as Apache in XAMPP will always write the error 500 details to the error.log file if the server is running.

Do you have any more servers running on your PC.

Does Apache and MySQL appear as Running in green in the XAMPP Control Panel?

Check by running xampp-portcheck.exe found in the C:\xampp folder on a default installation and make sure that port 80, 443 and 3306 are occupied by XAMPP's server components.

Type http://localhost/xampp/index.php in your browser and see if the orange XAMPP Welcome Demo page is loaded - which should also load if you just type http://localhost

If not what page is loaded?


You can try this by looking for a .htaccess file in the C:\xampp\htdocs\joomla folder and temporarily move it out of the folder and try again to load http://localhost/joomla - usually a 500 error is caused by an incorrect entry in a .htaccess file.


BTW how are you trying to set the root user password - details please.
Using the security page linked in the Welcome Demo Page is preferred and is documented in the readme_en.txt file.
