Thats not a good error reporting.
Why don't you post the full error message? copy and paste isn't that difficult.
This makes helping you much more difficult.
I've tried the Drupal 7 installation on my Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop VM.
The only database error i get was a pdo::__construct error.
I could solve this issue by typing as database host 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost.
I hope this will help you.
I know its not good error reporting sorry about that.
error:
Failed to connect to your database server. The server reports the following message: SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Invalid argument.
o Is the database server running?
o Does the database exist, and have you entered the correct database name?
o Have you entered the correct username and password?
o Have you entered the correct database hostname?
* Warning: PDO::__construct() [pdo.--construct]: [2002] Invalid argument (trying to connect via unix://) in DatabaseConnection->__construct() (line 300 of /opt/lampp/htdocs/drupal7/includes/database/database.inc).
as previously stated drupal7 was set up on xampp on an external-hard drive and win7 net book both work fine the same procedure was used to setup version6 on same day wich works fine in ubuntu. looking at requirement which seem to be met so not sure why mysql is screwing up in ubuntu. I tried version 7 for drupal half a dozen times but get this error every time.
