I get this error when I start apache_start.bat if I use a port checker program it says port 80 is open if i use xampp-portcheck program it says port 80 is free (not being used).

How do I fix this problem? Also I run on windows xp.

Possibility One:

If you used the 'Install as a service' option (usually by checking the Svc box in Control Panel) Apache is already started. So apache_start.bet is creating a second instance on the same port.

Possibility Two:
If you have previously installed Pache standalone, that service may be starting.

The way to tell -

Boot your machine, don't use any XAMPP controls or 'start' batches.

In Windows: My Computer > Manage > Services and Applications > Services (WIndows Service Control Management, Double Click Services and see if the APache2.2 service is running and in its properties, check the 'Path to executable'.

Good Luck

No it doesn't seem to be any of those. If I change the ip to 127.0.0.1 it starts up fine.
But whenever i change to my external ip or my dns it gives me that error and doesn't start up.
Problem is not with multiple apache, I just had another program starting on port 80 to try and it worked fine.

Thta would have been nice to know..

I think it means that the address is not bound to the computer by the OS. Its a Windows error - not an Apache error.

so the question is "when you change WHAT to your external IP or my DNS" - what value are you changing the "Listen" value? or the "ServerName"

If you are changing the ServerName, try pinging the IP address/hostname to see if it is reachable/resolvable.

Listen values must be bound to a NIC in the local machine.
