Open XAMPP

Postby wrecker69 » 12. June 2010 03:56

I have XAMPP 1.7.3 running on a Windows7 Home premium 64 Bit and it will open in IE* but not the latest Firefox. Any ideas why? What I need to do to fix that?

You tried 127.0.0.1 or localhost?

Yes I did. I had it running fine on my old PC with XP, but this new one with Windows seven is giving me trouble with Firefox. Firefox is my browser of choice.

I have Win7 and FF, everything is fine with XAMPP.

What error message do you get on FF?

Here is what I get when I try localhost...

Oops! Firefox could not connect to localhost

Suggestions:

* Go to www.localhost.net
* Go to localhost.com
* Go to localho.st
* Try reloading: localhost

Same with 127.0.0.1? 127.0.0.1 is a loop-back IP address so there is no need of resolving it.

If the same happens I would blame security apps.

Sorry for the inactivity. Personal family issues as well as major PC meltdown issues. All resolved. Except for these damn Firefox issues. I did a complete re-install of the latest version of XAMPP for windows. I searched for and got rid of any and all files related to XAMPP before successfully installing the new version. Same problem. It will run in IE but not Firefox. I can't figure it out for the life of me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi -

Couple questions -

Did you follow Radzio's suggestion and try 127.0.0.1 in Firefox? IF 127.0.0.1 works in FireFox, but localhost does not, the problem may be the hosts file.

What's in your hosts file? (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)

IF you have this entry:

::1 localhost

try removing it and then testing Firefox. Its the IPv6 variant of localhost, and has caused problems for some applications.
If you use Notepad, you will probably have to use the 'Run as Administrator' Option (right click).

Good Luck

Thanks JonB. Yes, as stated in my third post, I have tried 127.0.0.1. I just tried your suggestion to eliminate that line of code from the hosts file. It had no affect on FF. It did not mess with IE so that is a good thing, I guess. But I want (need) to be able to access localhost in FF for design purposes. Could the problem be with some setting in Windows 7? I have run out of ideas.

Thanks, wrecker69

My Win 7 box is down at the office, so I don't have a means of testing this at the moment, but I don't think I had a problem with that.

What exact version of FireFox are you running?

Have you tested any other browsers, or other FF versions?

I have a thought that is any easy test -

Save your FF bookmarks, uninstall FF, clean out any folders, do a registry cleaning, reboot, and install a new, clean no plugi-ns version of FF.

I say this because FF is known for having weird cache and plug-in errors.

IE 'renders' weird, FF 'acts' weird -- No wonder people love Chrome (which has its own set of issues) and lets not EVEN talk about Opera -- The ET browser (hehehehe)

Good Luck

Thanks everyone for your input. I have found out that it was a firewall issue. I am now dealing with my antivrus software company and it should all be fixed shortly. Thanks again for all your help. I love this forum.
