The shell is the terminal !
You have it under the menu in accesories
othewise
[alt]+[F2] gnome-terminal [enter]
You just have to download the file from xampp website
the file is xampp???.tr.gz
Then extract the archive with the command tar xvfz name_of_arcive.tar.gz -C /opt

To navigate thru folders with terminal :
ls [enter] list the files and folder of current location
cd / move to the root of the filesystem
cd something move to the folder something wich was in the current location
You can also type explicit location ex /home/you_user_name/documents
Or use ../ to go up one level
./something to specify you start from curent location
You have to go to the folder where you have downloaded the xampp.tar.gz then type the command you had written above.

Hi Thanks for the advice
When I download the XAMPP for Linux, it brings up that file but asks me whether or not I want to find it. How do I go to this folder after I download the program to my desktop?

How do you downlaod it ? Firefox ? In this case use the icon of firefox for downloads. Right click on the file and choose open folder
You will see where the file is ! Note the path or copy it to gedit (=notepad)
then launch gnome-terminal
and type cd the_path_you_have_noted_with_a_leading_\
I have to leave for 20 minutes: I will come back on this forum
