can't preview in browser

I am using dreamweaver, trying to set up my test server.

Manage Sites
->Edit (my website)
->Advanced
->Category
->Testing Server
->Server Model: None
Access: Local/Network
Testing Server Folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\
URL prefix: http://localhost/

Then when I try to go to the basic tab (instead of advanced) I get this pop-up: "This site's testing and remote servers are different. This scenario is not supported in the site wizard."

Then when I go to Preview in Browser I get this message in the tab, "Server error!

The server encountered an internal error and was unable to complete your request. Either the server is overloaded or there was an error in a CGI script.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

First make sure Apache and MySQL are running in your XAMPP Control Panel as DW will check the addresses and locations you type in the Advanced tab.

Example Only using DW MX4 adjust to suit newer versions as required.

Example settings for testing on Local/Network XAMPP only.


Advanced Tab

Local Info
Site Name: Pastel Dreams
Local root folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\pastel_dreams\
Tick in box Refresh local file list automatically
Default image folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\pastel_dreams\images\
HTTP address: http://localhost/pastel_dreams/
Tick the Cache box if required.

Remote Info
Access: Local/Network
Remote folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\pastel_dreams\
Tick the box Refresh remote file list automatically

Testing Server
Server Model: PHP MySQL
Access: Local/Network
Testing server folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\pastel_dreams\
Tick the box Refresh remote file list automatically
URL prefix: http://localhost/pastel_dreams/

Click OK > Done

Copy your web site files in to the pastel_dreams folder or...
...create your site and check it is being saved to the pastel_dreams folder.

Preview your site in your browser from the File menu in DW...
...or type http://localhost/pastel_dreams/ in your browser.


For all Server 500 errors - check the C:\xampp\apache\logs\error.log file.
