Help with XAMPP installation and set up

Postby archerymonkey75 » 14. December 2009 23:30

I have downloaded and extracted /xampp to the root of my webserver. When I go to http://localhost/xampp i only see a directory listing, not the configuration page that is supposed to be shown. The XAMPP Control Panel works fine, although I do not see anything about a PHP module, do I have to set that up separately? I do not currently have PHP installed. Also, I previously had another Apache HTTP server running...will the XAMPP installation override that Apache server?

Thank you very much for your help!!

XAMPP is a separate series of integrated web server components that should be installed to the root partition of a drive on your PC, for example C:\ so you get C:\xampp after installation.

Other Apache, MySQL and PHP installations could impact on the XAMPP installation so are best uninstalled and all traces removed completely before installing XAMPP, this will eliminate any conflicts and confusion.

Follow the installation instructions and methods contained in the below reading.

Thank you, I did read the readme file and I thought I followed all of the instructions. Will XAMPP not work if I install it in a different directory? My previous web server was C:\www\http so i put XAMPP in C:\www\http\xampp.

I guess if I have to, I will uninstall Apache and XAMPP and then reinstall XAMPP to C:\xampp

Best install XAMPP to C:\ as described in the installation instruction on the XAMPP for Windows home page.

If you have already installed XAMPP then uninstall it as per either of the 2 methods described on the above home page before installing again.

Thank you!...I have just uninstalled Apache standalone and reinstalled XAMPP...now I can get the XAMPP configuration page at http://localhost . What if I wanted to install Wordpress or Joomla? How easy is it do to that with XAMPP? I tried with just Apache, PHP and MySQL standalones and it was not very easy.

I cannot figure out how to get my old webpage back onto http://localhost

All of my files are in C:\xampp\htdocs but http://localhost opens http://localhost/xampp - Do I have to edit httpd.conf?

Ok, so I change the filename of index.php and now I can get my regular homepage on http://localhost

Now, if I am on a different machine, I cannot get my homepage...it should just be http://servername

Tip:
First remove the index.php in the htdocs folder - you sorted that already.
Install Joomla to say htdocs\jm for example.
Install WordPress to say htdocs\wp for example.
(This will help to save much extra typing in the browser's address bar).

Then to access them:
http://localhost/jm/index.php
http://localhost/wp/index.php

XAMPP Welcome Demos Page can then still be accessed by:
http://localhost/xampp/index.php

I would say that perhaps the hardest part would be to create the databases and the database users - don't use the super user root for security reasons - so here I have created a mini tutorial on how to do this for WP but the method can also be used for Joomla or any such scripts that require a database to be created using phpMyAdmin.
