Need Forwarding Help

Postby blubill » 10. December 2009 03:27

I'm a real beginner at this. I tried searching for a while but to be honest I don't even really know what I am searching for.

My issue is like this, I have Verizon DSL and recently installed xampp. I went into the httpd.conf file and changed the listening port to all kinds of different numbers and restarted the apache service everytime. Each time I also went into my Netgear router and changed the port forwarding to the appropriate number. For some reason I can never get the outside world to be able to actually use any of the ports I pick. At least that's what i think is wrong. I don't think I know how to correctly forward the ports to make the incoming request go to the correct port which will forward it to my web site.

Is it correct that I set up like this:

Start Port: 335 End Port:335 Server IP Address 192.168.2.2

And then change to "Listen 335" in the httpd.conf file

See if these links can help you sort out your problem, select your router make and model from the Router List in one and in the other select Router Guides and go from there, there is a little free app that may do it all for you automagically - Simple Port Forwarding.
http://www.simpleportforwarding.com/
http://portforward.com/
Both sites provide their info for free.

Thanks for the help.

I downloaded that program and set up my ports (editing port 80 to 8080) and it looks like it changed the settings correctly. I still can't get through though. Does that mean my problem is on my PC side?

When I open XAMPP Control Panel and click the "check ports" button it says Apache (HTTP) is 80. I changed the Listen port to 8080 in httpd.conf and stopped/started the Apache service.....is it still only listening on port 80? It I go to http://localhost:8080 it loads fine. Just can't use http://my IP Address:8080 to get to it from the outside world.

OK, so I am hesitant to say this because everyone reading it will know I was an idiot but I did find the resolution and want to post it even though it's completely obvious, in case it helps someone with the same issue.

I forgot to make an exception in my local firewall. Once I made the exception in Windows 7 it worked fine. The traffic was apparently making it through my router and into my network only to be blocked by my Windows Firewall. Duh lol.

Anyway, thank you very much for your help and I will see you around on the boards.
