Utilize XAMPP on Windows Server Via Mac

Postby dmh5 » 08. December 2009 02:11

I have a testing server set up on my Windows 2003 Small Business Server. I have no problem developing and testing via my Windows based PC, storing all files and developing all databases on the server. To preview/test sites and access the XAMPP admin and phpMyAdmin, all I have to do is enter in the browser http://servername:####/SiteName/ or http://servername:####/. Now I've tried this same approach via my Mac, and it doesn't work. I can't preview sites nor access XAMPP and phpMyAdmin. I'm new to Mac and trying to make the switch. I use Dreamweaver for developing sites. I really want to access the server via the Mac since all our sites are already there. And, all my staff are using Macs and I want them to be able to utilize the testing server as well. I've done some searching out there, but to no avail. Anyone have some suggestions on how to make this work?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Also, I forgot to mention that I can access the files on the server through the Finder, just can't view sites, XAMPP, or phpMyAdmin.

I can't preview sites nor access XAMPP and phpMyAdmin.

You mean "http://localhost/" is not working after the installation of "XAMPP for Mac OS X" (without additional changes)?

I've installed locally on the Mac as well and all is well there. On the Windows Server is where I'm unable to preview sites nor access XAMPP and phpMyadmin. I can see the website files and open them on the Windows Server through Finder, but I can't utilize the server for testing. The process I use via my PCs doesn't work on the Mac (see original post). So I'm wondering if the Mac has some settings that need to be tweaked to utilize the Windows Server for testing?

So you have installed a "XAMPP for Windows" on a Windows box and can't access this "XAMPP for Windows" installation?

Correct. I can and have been utilizing the XAMPP for Windows on the Windows Server via my PC. It's the Mac that I can't get to connect.

OK, So you can do a "http://localhost/" on the Win2k3 Server and it's working. Any other client which can connect?

I can access the files on the server through the Finder, just can't view sites, XAMPP

What is "finder", also a web browser? (sorry, never heard of it)

Well, AFAIK the normal webbrowser on OS X is called "Safari". So what happens if you open "Safari" and using the URI "http://ip-from-the-w2k3server/"?

Yes, I can type into IE on my PC http://servername:####/ and connect. I have three PCs that can connect, but 2 Macs that can not.

Finder is the Mac equivalent to PC's My Computer.

On Mac, in Safari, when I type http://servername:####/, I get:

Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://servername:####/” because Safari can’t connect to the server “servername”.

On Mac, in Safari, when I type http://ip-from-the-w2k3server/, I get:

You are not authorized to view this page

The Web server you are attempting to reach has a list of IP addresses that are not allowed to access the Web site, and the IP address of your browsing computer is on this list.
Please try the following:

Contact the Web site administrator if you believe you should be able to view this directory or page.
HTTP Error 403.6 - Forbidden: IP address of the client has been rejected.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

Technical Information (for support personnel)

Go to Microsoft Product Support Services and perform a title search for the words HTTP and 403.
Open IIS Help, which is accessible in IIS Manager (inetmgr), and search for topics titled About Security, Limiting Access by IP Address, IP Address Access Restrictions, and About Custom Error Messages.

This error message is from an IIS webserver, and not from an XAMPP/Apache.

Okay, I just added the port number to the end of the Windows Server IP address, and I was able to access XAMPP, phpMyAdmin, and view websites!

Now, why can't I type the name of the server like I do with the PCs and accomplish the same thing? Is there some settings on a Mac that need to be setup?

Maybe your DNS settings are not correct. Or you don't have a DNS server.
(Windows PCs can use other methods to find each other.)
