Apache service on Vista and possible port 80 woes

Postby Heidi68 » 30. November 2009 02:48

Hello,

I could use some help. I have read and tried many of the suggestions posted in other topics to no avail. I am using Windows Vista Home Edition. I am not able to get the Apache service to run. The error in the log is:

(OS 10013)An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. : make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80
(OS 10013)An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. : make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

So I ran netstat -0 I do not see anything for port 80. When I do the port check in the Xampp control panal I get the list below.
it shows the Status of port 80 as SYSTEM. does this mean some other service is already using 80? how can I figure out what it is? do I need to have port 80 open in my firewall porgram? I tried it both on and off and it didn't make a difference.

I think the problem might be that IIS7 is using port 80. But I changed IIS7 to use 8080 but Apache still would not start.

The only reason I am trying to use xammp is because it sounded like it would be so easy in this guide I found for Joomla at http://help.joomla.org/files/VisualGuide15.pdf.

I am frustarted so I really hope someone can help.

thanks!

Perhaps IIS is still using the ports so best to disable it in the Windows Control Panel as your error message is quite clear that something else is still using port 80

Double check your firewall and/or Virus scanners and/or ZoneAlarm if you are using it that all are temporarily disabled then you may be able to see if one of those is the culprit.

In Vista you are logged in as an Administrator?

Did you make several attempts at installing XAMPP?
