Why is there heavy disk activity xampp cntl pnll is running?

When the xampp control panel is running, my disk traffic led burns almost steadily, and everything drags along; e.g. it frequently takes over 10 seconds just to minimize a task to the taskbar. I'm using WXP Pro 32bit on a Dell Vostro 1710 with a 2GB CPU and 3GB Ram. When I the xampp control panel everything moves like lightning.

Which version of XAMPP?

Check which Windows process is showing high CPU usage by right clicking on the Task Bar and selecting Task Manager>Processes tab.
