Download Speed.

Postby kradical » 06. September 2009 01:43

I'm using Xampp on my Vista32bit box to act as sort of a file server for my girlfriend and her mom/dad. we have 20 meg internet which downloads usually at like 2000kbps or more. When my girlfriend tries to download something from my xampp server the speed is caped out at like 250K. This is rediculous. Any Idea why???

Assuming you have a standard a-dsl line, the "a" stands for "asynchron". Means: You have an other download speed (faster) then your upload speed (lower). And your upload speed is the maximum speed someone other can have as max. download speed from your home server.

Thanks for the newbie lesson but I understand my max upload rate is the fastest someone can download from me. As I said I have a 20meg internet connection. 1.5meg upload speed. There is no reason why my girlfriend who is sitting right next to me, would be downloading at only 250k

The correct unit is megabit. So you have n down/up from 20/1.5 megabit.

would be downloading at only 250k

A normal browser is showing you the unit kilobyte.

--> see the difference between bit and byte.

1 byte = 8 bit yeah I get it, congratulations you can pass intro to computers, clearly you have nothing of importance to say. Now does anyone who knows anything about xampp have any idea why I am getting download speeds less than 1/5 of what I should be getting ?

No. Maybe you want take a calculator and convert 1.5 megabit to kilobyte yourself...

I admit when I'm wrong under any circumstances because I'm not petty. So alright I guess mathematically it makes sense (that's me saying "sorry for being a D-BAG"), however my girlfriend is on the same network as I am. I still don't understand why it's so slow, nothing is being uploaded to the world wide web, she should be pulling the info straight from my box shouldn't seh?

Ah. I guess that's a point I misunderstood.

You have 2 pc on the same LAN and both are using the same switch. And now you are downloading something with PC1 from your XAMPP PC2?

What are you using in the URI, the LAN IP from the XAMPP PC2?

Yes, i'm having her connect to 192.168.1.105 which is my internal LAN ip. But get this, I have tested this with two other computers on the same subnet. My girlfriends mom upstairs, and my laptop. All 4 computers (server included) are running windows vista, some 32 and some 64bit. They all get the same lameo download rates. But here is the interesting part. When I boot my laptop into Backtrack Linux I can download from my web server up to 1.4 Meg, yes meg as in Megabyte. Is vista throttling the download some how?

Your XAMPP server is running Vista, not? I mean if you download from vista to vista from a Windows share (the primary Windows protocol is SMB).

I recognize SMB from my limited experience with metasploit. But I belive that deals with port 445 the microsoft-ds port. I am just launching a browser on client PC, pointing it to the IP of the server pc and downloading a file from there. Again from a linux client I'm getting 1.5meg download rate, but only 250k on windows
