Unable to connect to http://localhost/xampp/htdoc...

Postby Jim O » 20. June 2009 18:27

I just installed xampp and I have two problems. The main problem is when I try to connect with any of my browsers to http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/mywebsite. I get a error 404 and it said that "The requested URL was not found on this server If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again". First I was trying to set this up in Dreamweaver under site management page in the testing server http:// located near the bottom of the page. But I also tested the http://localhost/xampp/htdocs and http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/mywebsite in the browser address window and get the same error.

What I can get is when I enter http://localhost/xampp only I get the Xampp Welcome page and I have been able to setup security, phpMyAdmin, even import the dreamweaver sample "feeback" database into MySql, because I am trying to learn how to build dynamic pages in Dreamweaver. The main problem is the server can never locate mywebsite in the htdocs folder nor can it find the htdocs folder in the xampp folder. Can someone please help me with this problem?

My 2nd problem is that I am unable to stop the Apache and/or MySql from the xampp control panel. Both indicate Running all of the time. This problem might have something to do with the first but not sure. I have not reinstalled xampp yet I just wanted to get some respond first please.

Thanks
Jim

I guess you mean http://localhost/mywebsite.

My 2nd problem is that I am unable to stop the Apache and/or MySql from the xampp control panel.

- Your OS?
- How did you start Apache/MySQL?

Hello,
When you say I guess you mean "http://localhost/mywebsite" makes me think how dumb I may sound which could be true. But, I think I am following the adobe's tutorial at "http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_dynamic_site_pt1_05.html" correctly. It said that when you use xampp, the address for windows will be "C:\xampp\htdocs" so I put it in "http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/mywebsite" (I am using window's Vista Ultra). Going by this tutorial I never thought that I wasn't in the root folder. Is putting mywebsite in the http://localhost/mywebsite location is what I need to do? It sound right?

I am using Vista Ulta. When I installed xampp on my computer I selected the "svc" check box which starts apache and MySql both ( I have each checked) that is how I start both when the computer boots.

Thank you for your fast response.

It said that when you use xampp, the address for windows will be "C:\xampp\htdocs" so I put it in "http://localhost/xampp/htdocs/mywebsite"

Code: Select all
Filesystem Path           | URI (Path)
-------------------------------------------------------
C:\xampp\htdocs           | http://localhost/
C:\xampp\htdocs\mywebsite | http://localhost/mywebsite/

I am using Vista Ulta. When I installed xampp on my computer I selected the "svc" check box which starts apache and MySql both

A Windows service can only be controlled as administrator.

I am unable to stop the Apache and/or MySql from the xampp control panel.

--> If you don't start the control panel as administrator, you can't control the services.

Thank You Wiedmann!
Your answer has been a great help to me. I have been trying to get the apache server working for a long time and I knew I was close. Your answer worked great. I am so pleased. I wished the tutorial at Adobe had spelled it out like you did because I am new at this and even the little things turns in to big (you can't get any further) problems. Once again thank you for your help.

About the problem with starting and stopping the services in the control panel. When I installed the xampp program which installed correctly it said I believe as admin. I was able to select both checked boxes for Apache and MySql services and that is why they starts up when I boot up the computer each time. I only have a administrative user accountwhen I login into the welcome window page. And as far as I know I login each time as the administrator. Maybe I am not logging in as the adminstrator that way but I think I am. Unless you have the correct way to login as administrator that I can use I don't know how to login correctly I guess. If I am logging in as adminstrator correctly how can I stop and start the Apache and/or MySql services from this point since it is runninng and I can not stop them. Maybe threw the dos prompt? Or how?

Thank you again

Thank Wiedmann, Once again you have been a big help. Now I can turn the Apache server and MySql on and off it works great! I thought I was always logging in as the administrator when the computer boots ups because that is the only user I have in my UAC is the administrator.

I have question about the first problem that you helped me with. Windows has always used paths for finding files/folders and when I was having the first problem I didn't understand the difference of the path in windows and the path with the localhost. When windows looks for a file it has to have a path ex: C:\xampp\htdocs\mywebsite to find the file. My question is how does the server know where "Mywebsite" folder is located? Does the server or computer that the server is on duplicate the folder to the localhost location "http://localhost/mywebsite" or does the computer or server just knows some how where the mywebsite folder is located. How does it know?

Thanks once again
Jim
