HELP! Problems getting started with XAMPP

I downloaded XAMPP but when I tryed to start MySQL, I get this error: Starting MySQL.. ERROR! Manager of pid-file quit without updating file. (And this is right when I first downloaded the program) I have uninstalled and reinstalled it, with the same results. Apache starts right up and runs. I had a similar problem when trying to install MAMP, so I decided to try XAMPP. Is it my computer or am I really just sooo computer illiterate?
