XAMPP for Joomla "Access forbidden!" error message

Postby login418 » 02. June 2009 16:21

I followed this tutorial for setting up xampp for using joomla1.5:
http://www.veoh.com/collection/screencasts/watch/v1802750A7Mnpe7z

I successfully got Xampp running. Apache and MySQL runs too. I set up a new database and a new user assigned to that database. I extracted my files to a folder called "joomla" and put it in the htdocs folder. Now when I go to http://localhost/joomla I get this error message:

----------------------------
Access forbidden!

Going to "http://localhos"t will still take to xampp. So that still works. Can anyone help please!????

Which permissions are set to the Joomla-folder?

1. In Finder, select the Joomla-folder.
2. Choose 'Show info' from the File-menu (or press command i).
3. Check what the permissions are by 'ownership & permissions' (or 'sharing & permissions').

The webserver should have at least read-permissions.
If you running Tiger, you can set the group to 'admin' or 'nobody' and the access to 'read only' (or 'read & write').
If you running Leopard, then I believe you need to change the permissions of 'staff' to at least 'read only'.

If the problem still exists after changing the permissions, you can also choose to apply the permissions on enclosed items. Only beware if you had chosen 'read only' and apply this on enclosed items. Some folders and files inside the Joomla-folder need to be set to 'read & write'.

Thanks. Got it to work. But a few more details:

Under "Ownership & Permissions" click "Details".
Next to "Owner" click the "unlock" button.
Set Group Access to Read&Write.
Set Others to Read&Write.
done!

To set 'Others' to Read & Write is okay for a development environment, but not on a production server. Setting the read & write permissions for everyone means that anyone who could get access to the server, can do anything (for example changing files, delete files, etc.).
