Just in case anyone else runs into this error when trying to start MySQL, I resolved it by restarting my MacBookPro. Hopefully that will work for you, too.

Restarting is not working for me. I'll post my solution if/when I figure it out.

sudo killall mysqld

then start mysql - worked for me, hopefully you as well
