using existing db not able to access.

I have installed xampp to use for Joomla. I also wanted to have wordpress for my blog. So I have on my localhost setup for wordpress. I installed a new database via phpmyadmin. To save time I have imported from my host my existing sql db for wordpress. I also have copied my wp-config.php file from my host. My problem is that I can't get my localhost (on my pc) to access the wordpress db. Any help.
