No need to add this line as long as the first line is 127.0.0.1 localhost then the Hosts file is fine.

xx_princess_xx wrote:one more thing

Then we have not cleared up all the previous attempted installations properly - did you run the sc delete commands in the above instructions?

Make sure there is no tick in the Svc box next to MySQL.

Run the xampp\mysql\mysql_uninstallservice.bat file.

Then try and start MySQL again.

Now you need to do a search of your PC for any php.ini files that are not in the xampp folder and rename or delete them then try localhost again.

Greetings-

xx- Did you change anything in the httpd.conf file? What kind of authentication do you have enabled?

I experienced a similar problem with XAMPP v.1.7.0 on Windows XP SP2 when I tried to use AuthDigest for authentication.

This is the httpd.conf file and i havent changed anything

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "D:/xampp/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "D:/xampp/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild 0

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "D:/xampp/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

#
# However, Apache on Windows allows either the Unix behavior above, or can

In the XAMPP Control Panel (XCP) have you any ticks in the Svc boxes if so which Svc boxes are ticked?

If the MySQL Svc box is ticked then you have an issue that should not be after you re-installed following my instructions, as you did not install MySQL as a service during that re-install or did you use the Installer version of XAMPP again?

You can try this:
Go to xampp\mysql folder and run mysql_uninstallservice.bat file.
Then run the mysql_installservice.bat file.

Now go to the XCP and see if the tick is in the Svc box and the MySQL running is showing in green.

You don't need MySQL running to access http://localhost only Apache running - so if Apache is running then you should still be able to access http://localhost.

both apache and mysql svc boxes are ticked

mysql is running ok at the moment

i did follow your instruction when installing, but then ticked the svc box for mysql after because i thought you needed them both,

anyway http://localhost is still not working

Then you did not follow my instructions as there was no mention of installing the services by ticking the Svc boxes anywhere in the instructions, in fact the whole point of the reinstall using the 7 zip version instead of the installer version was not to start the Windows services but to start and stop the components manually.

Some people are confused by what service means as opposed to what an XAMPP component is.

A service relates to a Windows service which will start an XAMPP component every time you reboot your PC and so a registry entry is created to achieve this procedure.

An XAMPP component is one of Apache, MySQL etc. and no registry entry is needed to Start and Stop these components manually.

Anyhow, being as you have started the services again by ticking the Svc boxes make sure that both still have the ticks in the Svc boxes and both Apache and MySQL are running.

Now click on the SCM button in the XCP and look for Apache2.2 in the list of services.

It should show as Started in the status column.

Right click on the Apache2.2 entry and select Properties then the Log On tab.

Log on as: should have Local System account selected.
Tick the Allow service to interact with the desktop.

Click Apply then OK.

Then click on Restart the service in the left hand side of the Services (Local) window.

Close the SCM window.

Check in XCP that both Apache and MySQL are still running and both Svc boxes are ticked.

Go to http://localhost again after clearing your browser's cache (delete Temporary Internet Files) and see if you can access it now.

You can repeat the above process for MySQL if you wish.

Yes it can and thanks for telling me - it always pays to give as much detail as possible when asking for support as we have no idea at this end what you have on your PC or what you see on your screen or what you have done already unless you tell us.

Temporarily disable the AV and try again to access localhost.

I had the same problem---so make sure you change the setting of your system32\drivers\etc host file. make sure you # out the names that you are using:

for example

127.0.0.1 www.example.com (www.example.com -means uses your nameserver--)

do this before you install

#127.0.0.1 www.example.com

and it should go for you...

I have uninstalled xampp

changed the last line in the host file to

#127.0.0.1 www.example.com

reinstalled it using the zip, started apache and mysql without ticking the boxes, cleared my internet history

but still i cant access the local host.

I notice from the topic title that the "PROBLEM HAS NOW BEEN RESOLVED".

Would you mind telling the rest of the forum just how you managed to resolve the problem so that anyone reading this topic from a search will also know what you did, after all a lot of time and effort went into trying to help you and so it would be nice of you to at least return how you solved your problem so that you may perhaps be helping others.

Re: APACHE failed to install HELP (PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESOLVED)

I did get that same installation error about port 80 and 21.

I'm Using Windows XP...
I went to... Start | Control Panel | Administrative Services | Internet Information Services (aka IIS)

On my computer, port 80 was being used by my IIS default web site, so I expanded the folders on the left to find "Default Web Site". I right clicked it to find "Stop". I could also have clicked the square, black icon at the top of my IIS screen to stop the service.

On my computer, port 21 was being used by my IIS default FTP site, so I expanded the folders on the left to find "Default FTP Site". I right clicked it to find "Stop"... same as for Default Web Site.

Then, I got out of there and opened up the XAMPP control panel application. I was then able to click "start" to start both Apache and Mercury.

Still to-do: I'll have to find out which port Filezilla is having trouble with (35?) and find the program that is using that (probably Outlook?)... I'm desperately guessing at this point.

This is not the installation error that the OP posted about in the very first post:
viewtopic.php?p=141705#p141705
Which, as was pointed out, was not caused by the usual IIS and Skype conflict and the fix for which is well documented in these forums that a search will find.

The point in my last post was to have the OP inform the forum of how the original matter was eventually resolved.

Port 35/tcp and 35/udp is designated to any private printer server.
Running xampp-portcheck.exe should tell you what is using which ports.

So now this topic is waiting for the OP to post what resolved the original problem and not really for new posts - kindly create a new topic rather than add to this already bloated topic.
