Working behind CABLE Modem

Postby jpascone » 28. April 2009 18:03

First of all XAMPP went up in a matter of minutes, great work guy.. I am pretty savvy when it comes to port redirection so I was weary from the start that this would even work since I am issues a 192.X.X.X IP from my ISP. I am using DYDNS and port redirection on my public IP but I can't seem to get through from the outside world to my computer. Is this going to be impossible given the nature of my situation? The ISP wants to convert me to a business account (triple my cost) for a single routable IP addy.
Thanks,
Jeffrey

It depends. If you have IP address within 192.168.xxx.xxx, then it is impossible (you only spoke about 192.xxx.xxx.xxx). But if you are having different IP (for example 192.124.xxx..xxx), youre provider assigned an official public IP to you.

There are two ranges of IPs that are not public but are assigned to Local Area Network:

192.168.xxx.xxx
10.xxx.xxx.xxx

If youre IP is within one of these ranges, there is no way for you to offer a public webserver on that IP.

Well, that surprised me a little too.. If I look at my DHCP (Internet Connection Settings) from my router I see the following, I have opened up every incoming port on my router to redirect to my machine but have run a full port scan remote and everything is closed.. Am I just missing something obvious here??

(From ROuter Internet Connection Settings)
Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
Internet IP Address: 98.171.164.179
Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway: 98.171.160.1
DNS1: 68.105.28.12
DNS2: 68.105.29.12
DNS3: 68.105.28.11
MTU: 1500
DHCP Lease Time: 24 Hour
