I also have this same problem.

I'm running Vista basic, no IIS and Skype is set not to use these ports.

I tried to use the xampp_portcheck.exe tool to see what is using port 80 and / or 443 but the app window just seems to close when I run it (not sure how I'm meant to use this tool). Another port checker I downloaded lists port 80 in use for http, only

Any suggestions on what to do much appreciated.

Thanks

With Vista try right click on xampp-portcheck.exe and select to run the program as an administrator.

You can also use a tools like netstat and tcpview to check the ports

Well, I don't know how the installer is detecting used ports during service installation...

Can you install and start XAMPP without installing the services?

Can you explain what exactly you are doing? ...

I've installed XAMPP without installing all services?

.. if you have not installed any service, you can't start anything as service. (but you can start the servers as normal programs)

BTW the "?" at the and of this sentence. You have installed XAMPP without all services or not?

Yes I have installed XAMPP without all services.

Ok, and you can't start e.g. Apache?
--> what can you read, if you start Apache with "apache_start.bat"?

Bitte erst bei einem gewollten Shutdown schliessen
Please close this command only for Shutdown

With this message, your Apache is started and you can use it.

Hello,

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system\ruso there you will find the file ¨firewall.exe¨ just change the name of that file, when you restart your computer it might take a couple of seconds to connect to internet, eventually it will conect. Restart XAMPP, Apache will be running!

When yo are done just rename the firewall file to its original name.

Hope this works for all of those who have had the 80 and 443 port problems, best solution I could find

I've searched in C:\WINDOWS\system and also in C:\ for firewall.exe but there is no file exists named firewall.exe
