problem whit localhost or htdocs ???

I intalled lampp and I can start it whit no problems. If I type "localhost" in a browser i get the message "It works!".
Now I want to install joomla, so I paste the folder into /opt/lampp/htdocs folder. - localhost/Joomla is not working!
I make a directory 'something' and write simple 'index.html' inside it...
in a web browser: "http://localhost/something/index.html" ...gives me the error: '404 Not Found' same as before:

Apache/2.2.9 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.6-2ubuntu4.1 with Suhosin-Patch Server at localhost Port 80

Any ideas why is this happening?? What am I doing wrong?

This message is not from a XAMPP for Linux.
--> With "http://localhost/" you should see the XAMPP demopage.

You're right. If I stop lampp(/opt/lampp/lampp stop) I get the message "It Works!" anyway!

I think this is from the folder /var/www. If i create sample index.html like before but now
in this folder(/var/www/something) it works. So OS runs this 'localhost' not xampp...
