Upgrade from 1.6.6a to 1.7.0 results in PHP CLI problems

Hi there, I just upgraded to XAMPP 1.7.0 from 1.6.6a and now whenever I run command-line PHP, WinDbg pops up and the PHP interpreter hangs. The error message displayed in WinDbg is:

Symbol search path is: *** Invalid ***

I performed the upgrade by first running xampp-win32-upgrade-1.6.6-1.6.7-installer.exe and then running xampp-win32-upgrade-1.6.8-1.7.0-installer.exe. Perhaps I should have run an intermediate upgrade program to get from 1.6.7 to 1.6.8, but xampp-win32-upgrade-1.6.8-1.7.0-installer.exe seemed happy enough to upgrade a 1.6.7 installation, so I allowed it to do so.

I should note that the 1.6.6a installation and the 1.6.7 installation both seemed to work fine. So what I'd like to know is: how can I fix my 1.7.0 install so I don't get the errors any more? Thanks

PS. My OS is Vista Home Premium 32-bit. My XAMPP is in C:\xampp .

I've been looking into this, and it's not clear to me whether the error is something that might have been caused by the XAMPP upgrade or perhaps by something else going wrong with my system.

I'd be very grateful if anyone who knows more about the error I'm experiencing could give me some guidance on this, because at the moment I'm not sure whether the problem lies in XAMPP or Windows...

I should note that I get the error even if I just run php -v at the command line, so the problem is definitely not a result of my programming

Well, in the hope that it would help, I installed the Windows Vista x86 debugging symbol set following the instructions here. This didn't solve the problem entirely, though. Now when I run php -v I no longer get a WinDbg error that says the symbol path is invalid. Instead I get the following WinDbg message:
