XMAPP, Apache and MySQL Will Not Start

Problems with the Windows version of XAMPP, questions, comments, and anything related.

XMAPP, Apache and MySQL Will Not Start

Postby roncrockett » 16. March 2009 18:59

First thank you all for any help.

Second My Current System Specs

Microsoft windows XP professional
Version 2002

P4a 2.0 Ghz
1.5 Gigs RAM
Windows Service Pack 2

Running XAMPP 1.6.8
DynDNS 4.0.8
http://www.roncrockett.com

And except for the occasion "shake down" by the goons at comcast .
The box has performed quite dutifully for a few years now

Now for some reason Xampp and mysql cannot start under Services

Windows could not start the XAMPP Service on Local Computer.
For more information, review the System Event Log.
If this is a non-microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to specific error code 32

Checked the logs under Computer Management and did not see any unusual other that the server tanking on the 15
Looked the error code up online and it suggest that the port or services are being used by something else so now
my sites and files are unavailable and I get

Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

If you have installed IIS then stop "IIS admin" and "World Wide Web Publishing" services and try again. Did you run setup_xampp.bat file?

Running the setup_xampp.bat produces the following
Sorry, but ... nothing to do

And IIS is unchecked in Windows Components

The contents of httpd.conf

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/xampp/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/xampp/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.
#

# ThreadsPerChild: constant number of worker threads in the server process
# MaxRequestsPerChild: maximum number of requests a server process serves
ThreadsPerChild 250
MaxRequestsPerChild 0

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/xampp/apache"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses (0.0.0.0)
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

When I run apache_start.bat file I get:
I do not speak German btw and there is some on the error but I can make out in English

Apache 2 is starting...
(OS 10048) Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/ port) is normally permitted.
: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0.80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
Unable to open logs

Apache could not be started

Also when I run phpMyAdmin it has a error
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

Running mysql_start.bat produces the following:

InnoDB: The error means that another program is using InnoDB's files.
InnoDB: This might be a backup or antivirus software or another instance

Run xampp-portcheck.exe and find out what is using port 80 and disable it.

If not IIS then could be Skype but the port check will tell for sure.

Skype is not installed

But when I run the xampp-portcheck application the window opens then closes immediately
This is the same when run from cmd

When I run portcheck.bat from C:\xampp\install It get a little further but then tanks
portcheck configuration file says:

[Ports]
Port80=BLOCKED
Port443=BLOCKED
Port3306=BLOCKED
Port21=FREE
Port14147=FREE

Your firewall is not configured to allow those ports that XAMPP requires or your router or both.

Try configuring to allow those ports and try again to start the XAMPP components.

Have no router
Its Just straight from the NIC (Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection) to the RCA DCM425 that comcast provides.

Under Network Connections I am showing Local Area Connection as Connected and when I go to Properties/ Advanced and check the Firewall settings under General Tab I have the Firewall set to Off

Well it may be your Windows Firewall as something on your PC is blocking the ports and it sure is nothing to do with XAMPP.

How can you do this when you don't know what is the offending service?

Are you logged into your PC as an administrator or just a user?

Go to
start>Run..
Type
cmd.exe
Type
cd C:\xampp
Type
xampp-portcheck.exe

Or use netsat or tcpview to find what's using the ports.

Search for your Windows firewall help and/or location and configure it to allow those ports above.

I don't use it but have another firewall that I can configure to allow access to the ports XAMPP uses.

Do you have ZoneAlarm?
If so temporarily disable it and see if that helps.

It's your PC and I can only guess at what is blocking you because I don't have a crystal ball to be able to see your screen - it is your responsibility to know what is going on with your PC.
