can't start mysql

I get the error

#2002 - Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

How to fix? Thanks!

okay i chmod 777 the /opt/lampp/var/mysql directory and i got pass the .sock error but now a new one came up

Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)

arrghh...
