How do I set up XAMPP to http://localhost/

Not sure how to set up XAMPP correctly. I downloaded XAMPP installer upon recommendation from a friend to use as a testing server for my websites. I've read anything I can find on the site, readme file and searched the forums, but I can't find how to set it up correctly. Just the basics so I can start posting to test web pages.
