MySQL won't start either

Hello

I am having similar problems to bvoltz.

Within XAMPP control panel Apache starts fine, but MySQL does NOT. Gives " ERROR: MySQL service not started [-1] "

I have uninstalled & reinstalled but without success. There must be something erroneous written into the registry ???

Also by opening Services (via [SCM...] button) I see that MySQL is attempting to use the file c:/xampp/mysql/bin/mysqld-shareware.exe which indeed does not exist (although there are plenty of very similarly named .exe files in that /bin/ directory).

Any thoughts??? Many thanks.

What have you uninstalled?

Just uninstall the existing MySQL service (and make sure it's uninstalled). Then reinstall the MySQL service.

(BTW: I recommend to not install the XAMPP control center itself as service.)

Thank for replying. Update:

1. Uninstalled & re-installed complete XAMPP. Reinstalled in completely different file location, still on C:\ drive.

2. I have now installed XAMPP on another PC and all is working correctly there. Doesn't solve my problem however as Dreamweaver is installed on the one with the non-working XAMPP. My hope was that by looking for differences, could find a fix. Did reveal:-

3. The problem is connected with MySQL running "as a service" (whatever that means?). There is a ticked check box for MySQL "Svc". If I uncheck it, get "OK to uninstall the MySQL service" but when I click "OK" the tick momentarily disappears, but then re-appears .5 sec later.

Now is working correctly, thank you.
I ran C:\...\xampp\mysql mysql_uninstallservice.bat and that has cleared the "service" & MySQL now starts.

Answer to your questions:
- Your OS? = XP Prof SP3
- You are administrator? = Yes

If you start the control panel and click on "Service...". This should be disabled.

If you start the XAMPP Control Panel (XCP) then click on the Service... button, make sure there no ticks in any of the boxes in the Service settings window.

If you find any remove the ticks and click OK to exit the window or if non found Cancel to exit the window.
