install xdebug extension to php xampp developer Mac

I installed Xampp developer version all the status tests run. I am on Mac OS 10.4 tiger.

I need xdebug extension for php. I can't install it with pecl. I try pecl install xdebug and get nothing. I try pecl help and I get nothing. I also tried pear install xdebug-2.0.4.tgz. I get some errors but it is not a pear installation it is a pecl installation. It seems as if the pecl binary doesn't work? On the other hand /usr/bin/pear help does work. /usr/bin/pecl help doesn't work. How can I get pecl to install the php extension xdebug?

There is a patch for the windows version that contains a new php_xdebug.dll extension which I don't know if it may help or not - might be worth a try if you find nothing else.

xampp-patch2-win32-1.7.0.zip or there is a self extracting 7zip exe version of the patch.

/usr/bin/pear help does work. /usr/bin/pecl help

I don't think "pear" and "pecl" from XAMPP are in this path.

It isn't the path. I found the directory where it was installed the pecl command just doesn't work. Someone said you need the developer version on the mac. So I uninstalled xampp and tried to reinstall the 0.7.4 developer version. I got it from this page:

The regular XAMPP Mac OS X 0.7.4 version to download is a universal installer version. There is no gzip file, but the developer package downloads into a gzip file. So I first install the Xampp regular version from the binary. Then I build the developer package version as it only builds the xamppfiles folder. The main xampp folder is missing. But if I install the universal binary version first and then build the developer version it installs another xamppfiles folder. So now I have 2 xamppfiles folders. Is this right? It doesn't seem right but like I said if I only install the developer package I only get the xamppfiles folder period.

Can I throw away the xamppfiles folder for the universal binary and only use the xamppfiles folder for the developer version or do I have to combine them? If so do I have to check every folder to see what is different? How come I can't just install the whole xampp version for the developer package from the gzip file? Or the whole developer version from the universal binary?
