Hey Steve,
The best way to do so would be to make backups of your databases and your configuration files as well as your website files, then doing a complete uninstall of the old version and then install the new version and simply restore your databases and configuration files.
Upgrades are tricky and can often malfunction. It's easier and faster just doing a complete re-install with the newer version and this eliminates the problems that could come from updating.
