Multiple Versions of XAMPP, PHP, MySQL, and Apache

Postby vaxvms » 15. January 2009 13:58

For the past week, I have been trying to get Apache, PHP, and MySQL running on my computer. I have installed and uninstalled XAMPP and the pieces separately. I think I have also installed an IIS along the way. I have been getting random pieces of help from various Internet searches. For a while, I gave up and decided to use the software, provided by my webserver. Progress was slow so I decided it was best to do development work on my PC then copy it to my webserver. I eventually bought more books which led me to the decision that using XAMPP is probably the best way to install it all. I realize now, that I should have done more research, before I began. Now, I have a big mess. I have extraneous pieces of previous installations, all over my computer (Windows XP home).

I have been told that I should do this:
==> First make sure all XAMPP components are stopped and no XAMPP components are running as a service. Double-click on "xampp-portcheck.exe" in the xampp folder and ascertain that all ports are free. If they are not free then disable any programs that are using any of those ports that XAMPP exclusively requires - then check again till you get all free responses.

So far, this is what I have done:
==> I ran "xampp-portcheck.exe" and found a bunch of Apache, MySQL, FileZilla, and Mercury stuff were running. I was told my two inetinfo.exe files should not be there unless I was running another server on ftp and smtp. I don't know anything about ftp and smtp but I think the two inetinfo.exe files are leftovers from when I installed an IIS (from my earlier desperate and random efforts to get this stuff working).
==> I set my system so I could see all hidden files and did a search for "php.ini" files and deleted those files, anywhere other than in the xampp\apache\bin folder.

Here are my questions:
(1) How can I disable my Internet Information Server (IIS) ?
(2) How do I "stop all XAMPP components"
(3) How do I "uninstall any XAMPP services"

It's me again! Recall the "xampp-portcheck" shows the following ports usage:
-----------------------------------
Apache <HTTP> 80 x:\xampp\apache\bin\apache.exe
Apache <WebDAV> 81 free
Apache <HTTPS> 443 C:\xampp\apache\bin\apache.exe
MySQL 3306 C:\xampp\mysql\bin\mysql.exe
FileZilla <FTP> 21 C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe
FileZilla <Admin> 14147 free
Mercury <SMTP> 25 C:\WINDOWS\system\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe
Mercury <POP3> 110 free
Mercury <IMAP> 143 free
--------------------------------------
Notice the "inetinfo.exe" is using two separate ports. I was told to make sure all ports were free so I'm trying to free up the ports used by "inetinfo.exe" I did a file search and found only one "inetinfo.exe" file on my system in the directory: C:\WINDOWS32\

I ran the task manager (right click > task manager) and found only one version of "inetinfo.exe" running. Should I end this process? If so, should I select "End Process" or "End Process Tree" ?

Additional information: I ran the XAMPP Control Panel and this is what was displayed:
-----------------------------
Svc (checked) Apache [Running]
Svc (checked) MySQL [Running]
Svc (no check) FileZilla (not running)
Svc (no check) Mercury (not running)

XAMPP Control Panel Version 2.5 (9.May 2007)
Windows 5.1 Build 2600 Platform Service Pack 3
Current Directory C:\xampp
Install Directory C:\xampp
Status Check OK
----------------------------------
Additional Note: I installed Filezilla before installing the XAMPP package. I think I did not install Filezilla with XAMPP because it was already there and working.

To stop specific IIS Services, you can use the IIS Manager. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Manager.

If you do not need it, then you also can uninstall IIS.

The question is now what you want to do? You do not need to uninstall any services from XAMPP. At the moment Apache and MySQL are installed. If you want to install or uninstall a service, then open the control panel and check the ticks on the left side. If they are active, then the service is installed. If they are unticked, then the service is not installed.

Another related problem:
After a restart, the "XAMPP Control Panel" can be used only once. When I run it, it show Apache and MySQL are running. Then, I close it by clicking on the X. If I try to run it again, I get an error. ERROR: XAMPP is alrleady running. If I try to log off, I get the same error. ERROR: XAMPP is already running. If I restart my computer, then I can repeat the steps above.

In summary, it appears the XAMPP Control Panel can be run only once. After that, when I try to log off or try to run the program again, I get the error message: ERROR: XAMPP is already running. It appears that it's not closing properly.

I'm so sad. I feel like changing my icon from a smile to a frown! : (

Hello glitz85: I was told that two inetinfo.exe files should not show up in my port status display because all those ports need to be free (unless I was running another server on ftp and smtp). I don't think I'm running another server on ftp and smtp (I don't know what they are). I just want to cleanup my system so I can run the XAMPP components (Apache, PHP, and MySQL). I don't know where to begin.
ps - Under Control Panel > Administrative Tools ... I have "Internet Information Services" and "Internet Information Services (IIS6) Manager" When I click on them, the sub-screens look the same.

HELP!!!!
When I run the http://localhost/xampp/index.php I get the following error.
Error: MySQL said: Cannot connect: invalid settings. PhpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should chech the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

I fiddled around a little, then ran XXAMP Control Panel and got to PHP Admin. Then something very strange started happening... I got the message WinMySQL_Admin 1.4 -- Access violation address 1000A1G7 in module LibMySQL.dll Read of address 000000. This message kept repeating and repeating and repeating. I clicked on teh [X} and that didn't stop it. I clicked on the [OK] and that didn't stop it. I did a restart and when I restarted, the errors kept comming. Through XXAMP Control Panel, I stopped MySQL but the error messages keep comming. The error messages won't stop.

I think my computer is so messed up that I should uninstall XAMPP and make sure it's all cleaned up. Then, try installing it again. Any suggestions??? Is there anyone available who I can talk to on the phone?

I could not stop the continuous error message from "WinMySQL_Admin 1.4
Access Violation address 1000A1F7 in module libmysql.dll It kept displaying and displaying -- even when I restarted the computer. When I logged back on, the error message kept comming.

I uninstalled XAMPP completely. But... the error message keeps comming. How can I stop the error message? I give up with the XAMPP installation of PHP, Apache, and MySQL. I am now planning to pay a software specialist to come to my house and install it for me. I give up! Right now, I need to stop the process that is generating that error message. Any ideas?

Hi I am in this sort of trouble too but to stop that message I had to do cntrl alt delete and get into 'task manager'.
There look at the offending task and clik end-task.
It all stops then !

But I cannot get Xampp to install properly myself.

I completely uninstalled XAMPP and I kept getting that error message. Those error messages kept comming, even after I did a restart. You're right! The only way to stop those error messages was to get into the Task Manager and stop the process. Thanks!

After two weeks of this, I've finally given up. I am now looking for a software specialist to come to my home to install XAMPP, test it, and create a MySQL Database with one table. This forum is helpful, but I'm in too much trouble to solve all my problems, one at a time.

A note on the Xampp Control Panel-- Once you have run it, it stays running until you restart even if your 'x' it closed. However, once you have run it, it should have an icon in the notification area of your machine (lower right corner of your screen). To reopen the XCP, simply click that icon.

On the rest-- I had similar install/running problems you have described here. Below is what I finally did to get everything back on track:
    1. Uninstall Xampp, Filezilla (If you have other installations, ie: IIS, you may want to include it in the process)
    2. Do a search on the machine for Xammp files and delete them all
    3. I used CCleaner to clean the machine and it's registry.
    4. Restart the machine.
    5. I REPEATED steps 2,3, and 4 just to make sure I was rid of all previous entries.
    6. Then I reinstalled Xampp. I let it install everything it wanted, and to where it wanted. (It installed to C:\Xampp)

This worked for me on XP and Vista machines.

One more thing-- below is an image the Xampp-portcheck.exe from my Vista machine.

They should all be free before running XAMPP components or there will be a conflict. Check that you have uninstalled or disabled IIS.

Make sure if using a disk cleaner utility that you exclude the xampp folder after a fresh install or you will remove some needed zero length files and also needed files with a .tmp or .temp extension with disastrous results.

Izzy,
The portcheck pic I posted is on a working Vista machine with no errors. I posted it for info only. I use Ccleaner all the time with no bad results.
