Accessing my MYSQL from a command prompt

Postby esender » 15. January 2009 00:45

I am a bit of a newbie here and although I searched google and the whole forums, I have come up short on the following issues:

I would like to access my local Apache XAMPP MYSQL server on the command prompt. At my work, we connect remotely with PuTTy and it works fine. How do I connect to my local MySQL server and run the Unix and Mysql commands?

With that said, how would I overwrite a full database under the XAMPP MySQL server (this database is huge, about 1 GB, so using phpmyadmin won't suffice).

I.e., will this command work:
mysqldump -u [user] [database_name] | mysql -u [user] [new_database_name]

Appreciate any help :)
