Custom Error Documents - Need Some Help.

Postby dmphotography » 10. January 2009 21:33

I'm trying to use custom error pages, but I'm unable to succeed.

What I'm wanting to do is have a universal 404.html page to display across every site without having to add the 404.html document to every site folder.

I've tried using an Alias "/error/ in the httpd-xampp.conf file, then in my httpd.conf file I add ErrorDocument 404 "/error/404.html", but it doesn't work.

The Alias is like this:

Code: Select all
Alias /error/ "C:/errors/"
    <Directory "C:/errors">
        AllowOverride AuthConfig
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
    </Directory>

Thanks for your help.

This topic might contain some useful assistance with this custom error messages (keywords) issue and perhaps your other security concerns.

This forum search using Izzy in the Search for author: field and the above keywords may have more info for you to seed ideas perhaps.

Ya know, I called myself reading that post and I overlooked a crutial step that was preventing me from figuring it out. It was this:

Izzy wrote:Remember that any changes made in the above file will be over ridden by the file below. You would need to comment out this line if you did changes in the above file so the below file was not included:
# Multi-language error messages
Include conf/extra/httpd-multilang-errordoc.conf

to this:
# Multi-language error messages
# Include conf/extra/httpd-multilang-errordoc.conf

That's why it wasn't working and why I started this thread. Sorry about that.

I am pleased that you have now got it working and this is just another notch in your WebMaster Server Administrator belt. :)

Good luck and a tip for you - keep a searchable personal knowledge database of all this info you are accumulating, works a treat and saves you going slightly loopy hunting down what you know you already know but "just where did I put that snippet?".

I store text files I create and also forum posts that I feel will be repeat questions and answers from everywhere I can, plus of course much more than that - I then use His Grepship to search those files, but there may be a free open source or freeware alternative available perhaps or alternatively, simply create a database in the MySQL you already have. ;)

I use the "View your posts" link on these forums. Hehe. Works great, because I almost always comment on something I'm interested in.

Right now I have no idea how MySQL works other than I create a database when one is needed and I recently have learned by doing how to transfer forums and etc. by using the Export/Import database function. I really want to learn PHP and MySQL, but it works much better for me if I use it and get familiar with it's function and that way when I see the code and start learning it, I can piece it all together and it will make much better sense. Just "learning" a language and not knowing how it functions or what it does is very confusing and hard for me to grasp and understand.

As far as your mention of taking notes, can you please elaborate a little more on that? Perhaps a link to a software that does this so I can get some idea of what exactly you mean.

Thank you by the way Izzy. This has got to be the most useful and helpful forum I've ever come across.

View your posts is a new feature in phpBB3 and was not a choice in the old version 2 that we had to contend with and phrase searching was pointless as v2 only searched on the first word of the phrase and ignored the rest.

My workaround with v2 was to save the pages that contained good and verifiable knowledge via my browser and after doing a search for all my posts I downloaded those too, then again using His Grepship I could, and still do, search for keywords in all my previous posts on my PC which for me is a much quicker solution.

As far as your mention of taking notes, can you please elaborate a little more on that? Perhaps a link to a software that does this so I can get some idea of what exactly you mean.

I simply use my text editor, easy to copy and paste and add comments, links etc. then I save the file with a meaningful name and then I use His Grepship to search them for keywords much like when searching on these forums.

A Google search may come up with ready made freeware apps/scripts that can also do this job.

I won't edit the above post just in case you don't see it.

Both Sharley and I have and use a Personal Knowbase Free-form Note Organizer from
http://www.bitsmithsoft.com/
In fact I am just upgrading for free to the latest 3.1.1 version.

They have a 30 day free trial that will enable you to give it a thorough work out before buying.

I didn't mention it previously as the price of US$49.95 may be out of your range but IMHO it is quality software and so is well worth the outlay also they have many methods of extracting your dosh. :D

BTW it is portable now too (USB etc.).
