What is mod_php

I was just wondering if someone could explain to me exactly what mod_php is? I know that it is probably a very silly question, but it is the only part of the Windows XAMPP download that I cannot get a true definition for.

mod_php is the Apache-Module that parses Websites written in the programming language PHP.
