Various Problems (PHP/MySQL/Scripting/localhost - related?)

Postby comrade » 14. May 2008 14:12

Hello.

I've installed XAMPP for Windows. I'm using Windows XP 64-bit with SP2. XAMPP of course if installed as a 32-bit application.

First of all, I'm having trouble accessing the apache server at 'localhost'. I've seen some similar threads here with some solutions and whatnot. I'll try some of them. When I type 'localhost' or 'http://localhost/' in Firefox it tries to look up for www.localhost.com or something. If I type 127.0.0.1 it seems to work better. But still, some images or the left frame is not displayed until I manually refresh the page some times. Don't know what the problem is here.

Secondly, when I go to the Status page, there is a strange thing happening. Every time I refresh (or let's say every 5-10 seconds) some of the things there change their status from enabled to disabled and vice versa. For example PHP, MySQL Database, the script features etc.

Perhaps, that's why I can't see some of the xampp's php pages as I said above? (= related). In other words, it's not the refreshing that helps but the PHP is just disabled and after some seconds it becomes enabled and thus I'm able to correctly see the pages.

Don't know what's wrong. I've tried to disable the firewall and that sort of things. I can't say it helped.

Let me know what you think. (About the 'localhost' matter too if you can).
Thanks in advance.

First, I need to point out that I just installed XAMPP in the last couple days,
and only just got onto this forum in the last hour or so.
But I thot I'd try to do some good as soon as possible. :-/

I'm on WinXP+SP2 on an Athlon 64.

I have to say that it never occurred to me to type *either* www.localhost.com *or* 127.0.0.1 into my browser (Firefox).
I probably *should* have thought to try the IP address.
I can't think why I would expect it to be in the .COM, or any other,
top-level domain.

So I just typed in the bare-naked name of my computer,
as entered during the setup dialog (that may be a XAMPP thing),
which in turn is the name by which it's known on my in-house
Windoze "workgroup".

So, try that, and see if it's any more reliable. All I can think of.

Services...

Postby jkspin » 16. May 2008 16:56

It makes no sense to me, but when I was having similar problems I ticked the 'install as service' box, let it install, then un-checked the box and let it uninstall the service. After that it worked fine. I have no idea why this worked, but it was repeatable whenever the problem reoccurred.
I also had problems with reaching localhost for a while. Make sure you get all your syntax correct in the Windows host (windows\system32\drivers\etc\) file and in the Apache httpd-vhosts.conf file (\xampp\apache\conf\extra\).
I also had to add Win32DisableAcceptEx at the bottom of my httpd.conf file (\xampp\apache\conf).
