Client does not support authentication protocol requested

Loaded latest version of XAMMP on a Vista box. Did have mysql/php running on it before successfully but uninstalled them both to install XAMMP.

The XAMMP pages work fine but my existing code gives connection errors like the one below.

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client in D:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\public_html\admin\index.php on line 6

Any pointers?

btw.,

paths with included spaces might be problematic ...
