mysql.sock disappears after MySQL 5.0.51a startup

At first MySQL was running fine, but lately the mysql.sock has disappeared, preventing client from connecting.
MySQL starts fine and runs, the socket simply seem to vanish right after startup.
I tried to enable the "sticky" bit on /Applications/xampp/xamppfiles/var/mysql but that didn't fix anything.

Any thoughts?
(I can read German, but I don't want to offend anyone with trying to write it...)
