New Install setting up VHosts

Postby 101Phil » 27. February 2008 05:39

Hi there,

new to XAMPP not that new to Apache as I was running Apache 1.3 before hand. I had my Vhosts directories setup and was running mulitple dev sites on my local box. After a clean install and upgrade of my PC I decided to try XAMPP which Im happy with, should have done earlier.

So I get it installed and http://localhost/ works fine. I stop Apache edit http-vhosts.conf to add in my virtual directory as below.

Code: Select all
NameVirtualHost *:80
##Learn to be rich affiliate
<VirtualHost *:80>
     DocumentRoot "D:/101 web technology/current_sites/ltbr_affiliates/lance_jenkins/"
     ServerName ltbraff
</VirtualHost>

When I restart Apache, both http://localhost and http://ltbraff (my site name) display a 403 access denied message. I remove the Vhosts directive and http://localhost is back working as expected (ie The default XAMPP admin page.)

I can only assume that the vhosts directive is some how overwriting the server root..

Only thoughts and I hope I have posted enough detail. Ill keep on Googling and testing for an answer but if you guys have any tips that would be great

I don't see any "<Directory>" block, which allow access to this DocumentRoot directory.

I have edited the file and Im now able to see the website, though the include statements aren't working but thats another issue.

Notice I have now added a second website "Water" When I type in the address for the first site "ltbraff' I see the same site as if I type in "water" it is not seperating or uisng the name based websites? Is there something else in my config I need to do?

Its further up in the first post I made, though I have changed it from

*:80 to

# Use name-based virtual hosting.
#
NameVirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80

To me it seems that Apache is not listening to the VHost directives that I have set up, instead its serving all sites from the 1 doc root?

Code: Select all
NameVirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80

If "NameVirtualHost" is set to "127.0.0.1:80", "<VirtualHost ...>" must also use the lable "127.0.0.1:80".

Thanks for that, it appears to be working a treat. Only think now is

http://localhost and http://ltbraff are displaying the site site.

I would expect http://localhost to be displaying the XAMPP screen by default as I have checked the HTTP.conf file and the document root is c:\xampp\htdocs - So a little bit lost there.

Here is my Vhosts.conf file

# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/xampp/apache" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/xampp/apache/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which Apache.exe is located
# will be used by default.  It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths, however, to avoid
# confusion.

# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.

http://localhost and http://ltbraff are displaying the site site. I would expect http://localhost to be displaying the XAMPP screen by default

In this case you must setup a 3rd vhost for the ServerName "localhost" and the DocumentRoot "C:/xampp/htdocs"
